“A kind word is worth as much to the brain in terms of rewards as a certain amount of money.” - Matthew Lieberman

(click to tweet)

Would you consider yourself sociable? Or even a socialite? Do you think you’re an introvert or an extrovert? Are social experiences important to your life?

Matthew Lieberman argues that social things are actually the most important aspect of our lives. He says that when we are rejected, we feel actual, real pain. Pain that is just as real as when we experience physical pain. In fact, he claims that the pain of heartbreak can be just as intense as the pain of breaking a leg.

All humans are wired to be social. But why? What does this do for us? And how can we take this knowledge and use it to help us succeed at greater and greater levels? Learn more on this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

“Bullying is so painful to humans not just because of what the bully thinks, but because we think that others must think what the bully is thinking.” - Matthew Lieberman

(click to tweet)

Key Takeaways

  • Connection is the foundation on which our social lives are founded
  • Humans naturally want to be around people, a team
  • A kind word is worth as much to the brain in terms of rewards as a certain amount of money
  • All humans have a need to belong, and to know that others like, admire and love them
  • Bullying is so painful to humans not just because of what the bully thinks, but because we think that others must think what the bully is thinking
  • Social pain is real pain. Sometimes these are the absolute most painful experiences of our lives, i.e., a loved one’s death, a breakup, etc

This episode is a recording of a meetup in London. I go around the gathering, and ask a variety of people what their story is. The answers are fascinating!

If you’ve been following me for a bit, you know that this is my favorite conversation starter: “What is your story?” This opens up a whole world of possible responses from the person you are talking to, and allows them to get into far more detail about what they’re passionate about than if you simply asked them where they’re from, or what their job is.

I also dig a bit into how I was able to interview Jack Nicholson as my first ever celebrity interview, land a job hosting ESPN Sports Center, build a PR company, and much more! Listen up and please enjoy this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

Key Takeaways

  • Surround yourself with people you aren’t negative, and have similar goals to you
  • Notice the conversation starter: “What’s your story?” This opener opens the door for a huge variety of different conversations

  • Fearlessly approach people and try to learn whatever you can about them, their life, and their story

  • Be tenacious in asking people for what you want. Just ask!

What is your one thing? What is the single thing that you most want to be known for? What is the single thing that you have to get done today?

This show is a book review of “The One Thing” by Gary Kelly. The book speaks to the ways that it is easy to get distracted by competing interests and attention-grabbers, and that if we want to attain success, we need unwavering focus, for lengthy periods, on one single thing.

Many people keep to-do lists for their day. They carefully plot out the 7-8 or more things that they must get done that day, and then they work through them. Kelly tells us that this is actually an extremely inefficient way of going about the day. Instead, we should define the one single thing that would go a long way in getting us ahead in the areas we want to get ahead in, and go all out on that one thing.

So listen up to learn how to up your productivity on this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

Key Takeaways

  • Don’t create a checklist. Ask yourself, “what is the one thing you can do today that will move your life ahead?”
  • The worst thing you can do is constantly jump between jobs. When you switch jobs you are wasting effort on the switch, and it’s extremely inefficient
  • Chunk your work into single things that you can put all of your attention and focus on
  • Put all of your focus on what you want to be doing. Don’t waste time on other things, but put all of your attention into whatever your one thing is

“Ask yourself where you would be in a year if you ate perfectly.” - Dr. Glenn Livingston

(click to tweet)

Are you a binge-eater? Do you chronically over-eat? Maybe you’re just aware of the guilty pleasures that you let creep into your life habitually, and that you would be better off without them. Dr. Glenn Livingston is on the show today to help you learn how you can take control, eat the way you really want to, and thereby live the life you know you want to live!

Everyone has an inner-monster, and labeling it as such can go a long way towards helping you live the life you want to. Livingston calls his the “inner-pig,” but there are a variety of things you could call it, and allocating it to something different than you gives you additional willpower in your fight against the urges. You  can either do what you want to do, or acquiesce to the wishes of your inner monster. It’s your choice.

Understanding that eating the right way is actually what you want, and that you don’t want to continue the bad eating habits of your past is just the tip of the iceberg here, and Dr. Glenn Livingston has a lot to say about how to define what binge-eating is for you, how to craft the statement of what your perfect eating habits would look like, and why eating mindfully is so important to healthy eating. Listen up and learn on this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

“Mindfully eat your food, aware of each bite, to avoid eating more than you really need/want.” - Dr. Glenn Livingston

(click to tweet)

Key Takeaways:

  • Everyone needs to define for themselves what binge eating is, and what is not binge eating
  • Understand your inner monster, and label it to help you confine it
  • Regardless of your upbringing, your decisions are still your decisions and no one else’s. This doesn't discount the amount of work you may have to do to overcome your specific difficulties, but it is important that you understand that it is your decisions alone
  • Allocate the urges you want to avoid (binge-eating, etc) to your “inner- (monster pig, slacker)
  • Make sure you mindfully eat your food, aware of each bite, to avoid eating more than you really need/want
  • Create a definitive and declarative statement of what you want your eating habits to look like habitually
  • Ask yourself where you would be in a year if you followed your declarative statement perfectly
  • You must be confident that you are 100% sure in what you want, and that your inner-monster is the one trying to sneak ideas of cheating past you

“People say you can never look back. I like to look backwards, forward, and also live in the moment.” - James Swanwick

(click to tweet)

We constantly hear the phrase “you can never look back.” Whether in song, in advice, or any other form, it seems like people are opposed to the idea of “looking back,” or of nostalgically exploring your past, as if it will have some negative effect on your progress toward the future, will slow you down, or will make you try to go back to that time in your life.

In my opinion, there is a lot of positives that can come from looking back. In fact, I think that there are positives to looking backwards and forwards, and that this practice can, surprisingly, help you live more in the moment!

This may be a surprising idea to many. The advice of “never look back,” or “live in the future” is often given as a means of helping you live more in the moment. But I find clarity in where I’ve come by looking back, which helps me learn to always live in the moment and appreciate every second of every day.

Listen to this episode of the James Swanwick Show to learn what I think about living in the moment, why looking back, or times of nostalgia, can actually help you live in the moment, and why not every interaction needs to be about business. All that and more on this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

Key Takeaways

  • People say you can’t look back, but there’s value in the enrichment of nostalgia, and what you can learn from it
  • But never let your past define or limit you
  • Looking back can give you clarity towards where you want to go in the future
  • Thinking over your life, and what you’ve done, can fuel you toward the future, and even help you live more in the moment now
  • As long as you can simultaneously live in the moment, letting your thoughts wander toward the past or future can enrich you
  • Having goals but also being content in the moment is the sweet spot.
  • Try to make decisions to hang out with people that you don’t have a clear vision of how it can help you. These interactions will enrich your life

“None of your technical skills will amount to anything if you don’t have social skills.” - Robert Greene

(click to tweet)

Do you understand the laws of human nature? Do you know why you do what you do? Why humans make the decisions that they make? And do you know how to leverage social skills to accomplish what you want to in life?

Today’s guest is Robert Greene, the bestselling author of such books as “The 48 Laws of Power,” “The Art of Seduction,” “Mastery” and more. He’s here to discuss his upcoming book “The Laws of Human Nature,” where he explores what makes humans tick, and what that means for the person who wants to succeed in this life.

As we discuss in the interview, a lot of social success comes down to one’s ability to develop empathy for other people. To really step inside of their body and understand what they’re thinking, why they’re thinking, what they think about themselves and the story they tell about themselves, and then to affirm these things. If you want to be likeable, that’s the formula!

But there’s  lot more to dig into with Robert Greene, and we talk about many aspects of social awkwardness and how to avoid it, how to practice and improve one’s ability to socialize effectively, and so much more. You won’t want to miss this episode of the James Swanwick Show with Robert Greene!

“The key to social skills is empathy. Can you think inside someone else's skin?” - Robert Greene

(click to tweet)

Key Takeaways

  • None of your technical skills will amount to anything if you don’t have social skills
  • Everyone is born with a certain amount of people skills and social intelligence, but everyone can improve
  • The key to social skills is empathy. Can you think inside someone else's skin?
  • We’re born with all the tools to be incredibly social animals, but some people develop the skills, and some let the, stay dormant
  • Whatever state you’re in at the moment is only a starting point, and you can learn and improve greatly
  • Social interaction is essential to our health and well-being. People who live alone do not live as long and do not have as happy a life
  • Consider optimizing your facebook feed to make you happy and fulfilled
  • It’s built into us to always think that what we don’t have is better than what we do have
  • Avoid taking everything personally. That will prevent you from really listening to people and developing empathy with everyone. Take nothing personally
  • Always try to understand the perception of other people to empathise with them
  • We don’t really see the world how it is. We interpret it through a lens. The way you interpret the world affects the way people respond to you. You create the responses you get by the attitude you take
  • Remember that we are not rational animals, but rather emotional animals. Understand that to develop real empathy with people. If you want to influence people, you have to understand them on an emotional level
  • Find out what people think about themselves, and then confirm what they think if you want to make a powerful impression on people
  • Until you can speak the language of the person you are trying to persuade, you won’t get anywhere

Do you think marriage is necessary to have a happy, fulfilled life? Do you think it’s necessary for effectively raising children? Do you consider it a moral responsibility? What do you think?

Today, I’m bringing Dina back on the show to talk about whether or not marriage is really necessary. We’re digging into two opposing views that people take, and trying to understand the right answer.

For some, marriage is a confining thing. It ties you down, keeps you from doing what you really want, and makes you feel trapped. But for others, it is an incredibly freeing thing, where you are now completely free to do what you want without the pressure of continually finding new people to date, with increased security, and sharing a life with someone we cares deeply about you.

Listen to this conversation to get the ins and outs of where we stand on the issue, and then please let us know your thoughts! Tweet @JamesSwanwick and start a discussion! See you over there!

Key Takeaways

  • Marriage should not be a confining thing, it should be freeing. It should support you and give you freedom, not tie you down
  • Marriage difficulties, or lack of any marriage with those raising children, can often contribute to psychological issues a child will have to deal with later on in life. Some would say that marriage is a solution, others would say that better relationships are the only answer and that the decision to marry or not to plays no role in it
  • Most marriages that last long-term tend to have people involved who talk about things like “marrying your best friend,” not necessarily the person that you fall madly in love with
  • Be careful not to make any big decisions during the first approximately 3-month “infatuation phase.”
  • But also be careful about long periods of infatuation. It can be dangerous
  • Pay attention to what other people are saying about your relationships. Don’t let them define you, but also listen carefully to what they say
  • It’s easy to get “addicted” to the first infatuation phase of relationships, and not ever being able to get past that and into the deeper phase
  • Make sure you don’t settle for a marriage, for reasons like getting older, etc. But rather because you are confident in the decision

“No commitment means no results.” - Grant Cardone

Do you know how to sell? The truth is that selling is for more than just salespeople. It’s for everyone who wants to see success in their life. Everyone is selling something, whether that is a product, their idea of the world, or just where they want to eat tonight. You are selling every single day.

Today I am reviewing “Sell or be Sold” by Grant Cardone. The book is focused on salespeople, but has a ton of incredible advice for anyone who wants to live the best life possible! Learn how to sell to see your success and your happiness increase.

This episode is hard hitting, fast, and we get right into the education, so make sure to have a pen and paper ready to take notes, listen up and pay attention, because this skill could change your life!

Key Takeaways

  • You have to WANT it
  • If you know how to sell, you’ll never be without work and people needing you
  • Sales people make the world go ‘round
  • You can’t earn any real stature or financial success without the ability to persuade others
  • Commitment is required before results can start to happen
  • The most important sale is to yourself. You cannot sell anything until you are utterly and completely convinced that what you’re selling is the best thing in the world
  • Focus on winning whatever game you’re playing in life
  • Price is almost never the real objection. Move past that to find out what the real objection is. The real issue is love and confidence
  • When you get a price objection, try to move the customer to a more expensive product instead of a cheaper one
  • Selling is 80% people and 20% product
  • Become genuinely interested in finding the right product for the person rather than making the sale
  • Always agree with the customer. ALWAYS. There’s no easier way to end an argument than by agreeing with the opposition

“Rather than live in a narrow, flatlined life, why not climb the peaks and fall in the troughs of extraordinary life.” - Peter Sage

Are you focused enough on leveling up yourself? Most business owners, or people who want to do more in life, think that they need to acquire new skill sets, when in reality they need to acquire new mindsets. New skills will only allow entrepreneurs to make the same amount of money different ways, but a new mindset will allow the an entrepreneur to make more money, and do more good in the world.

Peter Sage is my guest today. As a serial entrepreneur (he’s started approximately 23 companies)  he understand what leads to success in business, as well as what leads to failure, and he has experienced both. Today, he’s sharing 7 ways to reinvent yourself to really level-up in business and life in a big way!

If you’ve ever wanted to get more out of your life, to increase both your income and the level of happiness and fulfillment in your life, this episode is for you! Listen up, take notes, and implement these mindset changes today on the James Swanwick Show!

“You cannot reinvent a business without reinventing the person who is leading that business.” - Peter Sage

(click to tweet)

Key Takeaways

  • A business is an expression of the business owner. Most business owners are looking for ways to up their technical skills, when they really need to up their mindset
  • Outer world ALWAYS follows inner world. If you think your life is too hectic, take a look at your mind, and your inner world
  • Understand the difference between advice and opinion. If someone is giving you advice on a skill set, that’s important to heed. But if you’re too concerned about other people’s opinion, it’s a waste of energy
  • Understand that everyone is the star of their own movie. That’s why it’s such a waste to modify your behavior based on what other people think. You’re only supporting cast at most, and often just extras. So modifying your behavior for them is a waste of time
  • If you feel depressed, go help other people
  • Write down what you’re grateful for to help make it less about you
  • Don’t be distracted by news that doesn’t affect you. Focus  on your life. Try giving up news for 30 days, and see if you’re any worse off. You’ll probably be better off
  • Practice over-delivering in whatever you’re doing.  The best job security is to do more than you get paid for
  • The brain doesn’t process negation. Don’t focus on the negative, focus on the positive

The 7 steps

  1. Stop swimming in GOOP: Good Opinion of Other People
  2. Stop making it about you. Create something that brings other people massive amounts of value to be successful
  3. Upgrade your environment. You will conform to those that are around you, so surround yourself with people who are what you want to be
  4. Raise your level of consciousness. Understand that life happens by you, not to you. You are responsible for everything that happens in your life
  5. Understand what money is. Your financial bank account should not lead your emotional bank account. The emotional bank account actually leads the financial bank account. Money is nothing more than perception of abundance, triggered by gratitude. Money in the bank account is nothing more than a by-product of the value you can add
  6. Check your identity. Identity governs over 90% of what you do. Ask, who am I? Your labels limit you, so carefully define and understand your identity. Decide who you are consciously, and live that life
  7. Give your gift. Everyone has a unique gift to give, so focus on yours and give it

How are you going to propose? What makes for a good proposal? And what larger advice for relationships can we learn from the way proposals are handled can we learn?

Today I’m talking with Dina Mary Zaky who, as it turns out, has been proposed to 3 times! (?!?) Find out how guys get it right, how they get it wrong, and where we disagree about all of this. Everyone has different opinions about the way relationships, and defining moments in relationships, should be handled, and that’s what this episode is all about.

So if you want some insight into what Dina and I think are the right and wrong ways to go about it, listen on, and learn, on this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

Key Takeaways:

  • Girlfriends/wives will judge your actions based on the thought they can tell you put into it
  • The more specific your actions towards the individual, the more meaningful they are
  • Grand gestures can work… but can also backfire in a BIG way
  • Be completely honest about where you are in any relationship to avoid hurting people worse than you have to

A lot of us find ourselves in frustrating situations, with people who routinely frustrate us, much of the time. Often, we imagine that it is completely out of our control to feel frustrated, as it is somebody else who is frustrating us, right? Maybe not…

As it turns out, there is a simple exercise, outlined in the book “Loving What Is” by Byron Katie, and I’m reviewing that book on this episode of The James Swanwick Show.

When you put negative and frustrating aspects of your life through the 4 question test, and really devote and give yourself over entirely to the process, you will find that you have a lot more control over how you feel about your situation than you think! Learn how, on this episode of The James Swanwick Show!

Key Takeaways

  • Whenever you’re frustrated about anything, put it through those 4 questions
  • Whenever you think something, turn it around, and find 3 different examples of where that turnaround is true
  • Question anything that you think or feel
  • Whenever you have a negative thought, imagine yourself completely without the thought, and imagine what that reality is like
  • Apply all of these questions and exercises to anything negative in your life

There are 4 questions that we can ask ourselves to completely change our life

  1. Is it true?
  2. Can you absolutely know that it is true?
  3. How do you react when you think that thought?
  4. Who would you be without that thought?

“You keep on trying different approaches, but the biggest gain comes from the experience of even trying” - Daniel Hayes

(click to tweet)

Do you know what it takes to be truly tough? To not take no for an answer, and to go and do battle in life? Daniel Hayes does. As a Middleweight Champion boxer, he’s seen his fair share of bruises and bumps. He’s come out on top, and he’s on the James Swanwick Show to talk about what it takes be a champion.

One of the most important takeaways is that failure can actually be a positive thing. While we often regret the loss of time, what we learn about ourselves, and who we become in the process, is usually worth so much more than the time invested. So don’t fear failure! Embrace it as a necessary part of the process to becoming the person that you want to be!

Learn how to be more persistent at life, how to not take no for an answer, how to be tenacious, and why you should continually throw yourself into uncomfortable situations on this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

“Goals are powerful because even if you don’t achieve the goal, the person you become is so worth it.” - Daniel Hayes

(click to tweet)

Key Takeaways:

  • Failures can be net positives in your life if you take the right lessons away from it
  • When you start a process, you must trust that it will work over time
  • Understand that if you want something that other people don’t have, you must live a life that is different from them
  • Persistence must be in the area of continually trying new things. Not consistently and persistently trying the same thing over and over if it doesn’t work
  • Continually throw yourself into uncomfortable situations to learn how to deal with them
  • The traumas that you go through will shape who you are

Do you feel like you’ve been stuck for forever? Like you’ve been trying to make progress for so long, and things are just taking forever? Like you’ve been stuck in the same place for FAR too long?

This episode outlines a simple exercise to go through to get you unstuck FAST! The good news is that there are simple steps to go through to get you headed the right direction, where you ultimately want to go, but they may be a bit different than you expect!

For example, I recommend outlining what you DON’T want, and who you DON’T want to be. After this, outline what you do want and who you do want to be, and the path from one to the other becomes much clearer.

Learn the exact steps to get unstuck on this episode of The James Swanwick Show!

Key Takeaways

  • Instead of figuring out what you want, find out what you definitely do not want, and it will bring clarity about what you do want
  • Make a whiteboard of the things that you definitely do NOT want
  • Then, work through what you DO want
  • After this exercise, the path from what you don’t want to what you do want will become much clearer

Do you find that it’s easy for you to fall into the ego trap? Entrepreneurs often find it easy, because they usually find themselves living such a different life and in such different circumstances from everyone else. Observing that, it’s extremely easy to start to think that you’re different from everyone else, and allow that to drive your ego.

Ryan Holiday, author of “Ego is the Enemy,” understands the ego, how to hold it in check, and why you must. Success comes when you understand your role, and hold your ego in place. For instance, when you are trying to build a business, ego will keep you from giving up control, and drive you to over-management, thereby holding you back.

While we admire a lot of people with large egos, Ryan makes the case that those people have such a large ego because of their uncompromising work ethic and skill set, and that they actually would have been able to accomplish more without their tremendous ego. Listen up and learn how to live a more successful and happier life with less ego on this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

Key Takeaways:

  • When ego for us means that we’re better than the rest of the world, it gets in our own way
  • Thinking that you’re better than everyone else is setting yourself up for failure
  • Sometimes ego can get you places. But it’s important to consider the consequences, often in relationships, and the fact that it actually won’t work for most people without the incredible skill sets of the people we admire who have big egos
  • Ego become a huge issue when you can’t appreciate others for who they are and what they bring
  • The ego trap is especially easy for entrepreneurs, because they find themselves in such a different life situation than others
  • When you think that you’re very different from other people, you end up becoming a jerk to other people
  • Ego will hold you back as your company grows because you will have such a hard time delegating
  • Awareness is the first step to fixing ego
  • While ego can drive you to success, you are not going to be good at everything. That’s why you must hold your ego in check so that you can get the right people on your team to help you succeed
  • In a social media world, everyone is a performer, but people don’t know how to balance a performance lifestyle, and the ego that comes from it
  • Have a mindset of gratefulness. Doing this continually will keep your ego in check

3 Steps to Keep Ego in Check

  1. Constantly pick up the mantle and mindset of a student/learner
  2. Fight the disease of me, the selfishness, and desire for attention
  3. Put effort into getting the most alive time you can out of every moment of your life

When was the last time that you took the time to sit down and write a handwritten letter to someone? Not very many people do it these days, and because of this, it makes a huge impression on anyone who receives it.

The impact of receiving a handwritten letter is immense, and disproportionate compared to the amount of effort it takes to write it. Because of this, it is one of the best ways to make a tremendous impression on someone. While you shouldn’t do it for this reason, the effect of the letter will be one of raising you greatly in the eyes of the receiver.

But the reason you should do this is because you care. Take the time to write down how you genuinely feel about someone, and send it to them. You will feel good about it, they will, and it can only help you, probably in a way that is disproportionate to the amount of effort it took to write it. Do it!

Key Takeaways:

  • Hand-written letters are extremely rare these days. It shows that you truly care, and put more work into the communication than most people will
  • You never know where doing something like this could lead, and what it could do for you in the future
  • Take the time to communicate what you genuinely feel in a way that will make an impression
  • When you take this step, the person you send it to will remember you

Do you know how to win with people? Are you a people person? Do you often dislike people? John C. Maxwell has a lot of very poignant points about people, how you should interact with them, and why interacting with them should be so important to you.

As John C Maxwell says, everyone but you is someone else, so understanding how to interact with other people and make a good impression on them should occupy most of your energy. It’s the difference-maker in how happy, fulfilled, and successful you will be in life. Ultimately, the things that bring fulfillment include others. The person who is entirely self-focused will feel restless and unfulfilled.

These are my book notes on the book “Winning with People” by John C. Maxwell. Listen to this episode to understand how to win more and better with people, enjoy your life more, see more success in your endeavors, and leave a positive imprint on the world, on this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

Key Takeaways:

  • One of the most important thing you will do is choose your friends
  • The difference between who you are now and who you are in 5 years will be the people you’re with and the books you read
  • If you don’t like people, that’s a statement about you and your viewpoint. You are the problem
  • If someone lashes out at you, the best thing to do is forgive and move on
  • In our relationships, we can either lift people up or bring them down. It takes no skill to tear down, but careful work to bring people up

  • Are you willing to change? No one is too old, smart, or experienced to not need any more change and improvement

It takes no skill to tear down, but careful work to bring people up
  • Each person you meet has the potential to teach you something
  • Believing the best about people brings out the best in people
  • Make giving to others you goal
  • Ultimately, the things that bring fulfillment include others. The person who is entirely self-focused will feel restless and unfulfilled

“You want to really understand deeply the obstacles that are getting in your way so that you know how to defeat them.” – Alan Belcher

(click to tweet)

No matter how hard you train, how in shape you are, or how ready you are for your defining moment, if your mindset isn’t right, it’s all for nothing. That’s why getting your mindset in order is one of the most important things to focus on, and today I have former UFC fighter Alan Belcher talking about exactly how you can do that!

As Alan explains, it’s all about remembering the 4 P’s of mindset: Present, Positive, don’t be a Pussy, and Process. We dive deeply into each of these on this episode, and when put together as a whole they combine to give you an unstoppable mindset!

So grab a pen and take notes so that you can make sure your mind is in the right spot next time it really counts! When everything is on the line, you MUST have your mindset straight, and that’s what you’re learning to do on this episode of The James Swanwick Show!

Key Takeaways:

  • Tactics and skills are important. But if you have all that but not the mindset, it doesn’t matter
  • Don’t be out of shape
  • Don’t give up
  • Every level that you attain, you will always be searching for the next level. This is human nature, and if you understand it, you can use it to your advantage
  • Have motivational triggers that get you into the right mindset
  • When you’re in a bad place, don’t think about the possible bad outcomes, but focus on the processes that will get you where you want to go

“You have to realize that the negative thoughts in your head is you self-sabotaging yourself.” – Alan Belcher

Four Magic Mantras to Get Your Mindset Right. Four P’s

  1. Present: This takes place before the moment you want to quit. Understand what can hold you back and be prepared
  2. Positive: Realize that negative thoughts in your head are you self-sabotaging yourself
  3. Don’t be a pussy: Become the person who will talk straight to yourself, and give it to yourself straight
  4. Process: Don’t get too caught up in the end-goal. Focus on the process, one step at a time

Would you be tenacious enough to go straight up to Arnold Schwarzenegger and ask him for what you wanted? I wasn’t at first…

I recently had the opportunity to spend some time hanging out at an event with Arnold Schwarzenegger. From the beginning, I knew that the ideal outcome would be that I would get a picture and maybe a video clip with Arnold wearing Swannies Blue Blocking Glasses.

Unfortunately, I almost completely missed the opportunity because I didn’t want to bother him, and was overall not tenacious enough. At first…

When I finally became tenacious in going after what I wanted, that’s when it all came together for me, as you will hear in this show. There are a lot of life lessons here, so listen to this episode to learn how to be aggressive and tenacious about getting what you want!

Key Takeaways:

  • Main Mission: Try to get Arnold to wear Swannies Blue Blocking Glasses
  • When you miss your opportunity with busy, in-demand people, you have to be tenacious to find another opportunity
  • Regardless of how many times it seems like you miss your opportunity, you can still probably get another one if you want it bad enough
  • Just ask for what you really want! Don’t beat around the bush, ask for it!
  • Always think bigger!

Do you know how to work a room? When you’re meeting new people, and in an unfamiliar environment, does it just seem like you’re the life of the party, or are you nervous and shy?

Today I’m reviewing the book “How to Work a Room” by Susan RoAne. If you’ve ever wondered how to make an awesome impression immediately, this episode is for you! So take notes, and learn how to be the person you want to be on this episode of The James Swanwick Show!

Key Takeaways

  • Be the person who introduces him or herself first. This will give you the power and control in the room
  • Try “what’s your story?” instead of “what do you do?” It opens up more conversational topics than just employment
  • Remember to keep smiling. If you’re smiling the first time someone sees you, they’re far more likely to be attracted to you in a platonic or romantic sense
  • Focus on having good continual posture

“Fundamentally, culture is at war against our nature, and any way that society can, it will suppress expressions of wildness.” - Daniel Vitalis

(click to tweet)

Nature and society are at constant war with each other for our way of live. As a species that has evolved from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, our bodies are not adequately equipped to deal with a modern life. While the evolution from hunter-gatherer to farmer is usually seen a positive evolution, we need to understand the ways in which our bodies are designed to function, and how we can use this knowledge to hack our lives.

That’s what Daniel Vitalis is talking about on this episode of the show. As Daniel says, “Fundamentally, the culture is at war against our nature, and any way that society can, it will suppress expressions of wildness.” But this is a war worth fighting, and one that it would actually be deadly not to fight.

Because, as we get into in-depth on the show, there are real dangers to our health and the environment with the systems that have been put in place through our society. Even things as seemingly innocent as the plastic bottles we carry water in could be detrimental. Learn how, and so much more, on this episode of The James Swanwick Show!

Key Takeaways:

  • The hunter/gatherer lifestyle is a much healthier and easier lifestyle than farming. Farming is dawn till dusk, whereas hunter/gatherer was about 15 hours of work per week
  • The reality is that our ancestors who were hunter/gatherers were far more developed as a species than we often give them credit for
  • In modern society, our lifestyles are so far away from that of our ancestors, that everything we do, 24/7 is fitting against our nature
  • The genetics of food matters. That is why when we eat genetically altered and modified fruits and veggies, we still may be doing harm. Look for local food, that hasn’t been shipped as far, and retains more nutrition.
  • Check out farmers markets for this kind of produce, because it will often have been cut that morning, and not be genetically modified
  • Prioritize highly the water you drink. It must be high quality. You’re making 65% of your body out of water, so it’s crucial
  • Reverse Osmosis actually cleans water too much. If you add a pinch of sea salt to a 5 gallon jug of water, it will put some of those minerals back into the water
  • Keep plastic water bottles out of the sun. If they get sun, the plastic will break down in the water, and the plastic will have an estrogen-like effect on the body. Use glass bottles if possible
  • Get a HEPA filter to help with all of the dust in the air
  • Get some Swannies Blue Blocking glasses to protect your eyes from electronics

Do you use time as an excuse for why you don’t workout? Do you feel like, in order for your workout to be of any value, you need to be able to devote 1-1.5 hours to it? The truth is that you don’t! The health and wellness benefits of working out regularly are far too high for you to use time as an excuse for skipping it, so listen to this episode to learn my 7-minute workout for when you have no time!

In addition I’ll be telling you about why spending time in the sun is so vital to health, and why you should make an effort to spend time barefoot in the grass for a greater sense of well-being and connection with the earth.

If you’re a busy person, and someone who is trying to prioritize health and wellness in your life, then this episode is for you! Learn how I’m able to fit a workout into any day, regardless of how busy the day is, on this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

Key Takeaways:

  • A short workout his 100% better than no workout. Even if you have “no time,” you can make 7-minutes for a workout
  • 4 - 5 sets of 20 burpees is enough to get the heart-rate up, and give you the benefits of a workout
  • Burpees are a good choice here because you’re utilizing every part of your body, rather than isolating one area. When you have little time, this is ideal
  • Studies show: Exercise = happiness. Make the time for it
  • Try to get time walking barefoot on grass, for a deeper connection to the earth. The earth has a magnetic pulse, and many think that when we spend time barefoot on the grass, it increases our sense of well-being
  • There’s no excuse for not doing the 7-minute workout. You can make the time

“Don’t think act! We can always revise and revisit once we’ve acted, but we can accomplish nothing until we act.” - Steven Pressfield

(click to tweet)

Are you resistant to doing the actual work to get where you want to go? Do you find yourself in a place of continual procrastination on doing the things that you know you should be? You’re definitely not alone! What you’re experiencing is extremely common in the human race, and it’s why I’m reviewing the book “Do The Work” by Steven Pressfield on this episode!

Think about the projects that you have wanted to do in the past, and what may have held you back from them. Do you find yourself having a hard time starting? Do you find yourself caught in a cycle of endless research and study on the topic, without actually getting down to the nitty gritty of actually getting it done? Have you experienced friction and difficulty in actually finishing the last bit of the tasks you’ve started?

If you’re familiar with any of this, this episode is for you! But be warned: This advice is not for the faint of heart, or for those who would rather procrastinate and “research” their work. This is specifically designed to SHOCK you out of that mode, and into a mode of intense, unrelenting action toward your goals! So listen up, and get ready to make the progress you want on this episode of The James Swanwick Show!

Key Takeaways

  • Resistance comes from any act that rejects immediate gratification in favor of long-term gain
  • The more important a call or action is to our goals, the more resistance we will feel in trying to do it
  • Your friends and family tend to be invested in who they know as, which is who you were, not who you are becoming
  • Be clueless and cocky enough to think you can do anything. Don’t think, just believe in what you can do
  • Research can be procrastination. Just do it!
  • Think big. Go for it!
  • Figure out where you want to be, and work backwards from there
  • Record ideas as they come to you, so that you don’t forget them! Then go back and play them later
  • Don’t be ashamed of a crash. They always come, are part of the journey, and are the only way to get where you want to go
  • Finishing is the critical part of any project, and takes more effort than any other part of the process. Finish what you start!

“Happiness comes from getting the right relationship between yourself and: Others, your work, and something larger than yourself.” - Jonathan Haidt

(click to tweet)

What is happiness? How do we achieve it? Are attractive people happier? Are rich people happier? Could plastic surgery make you happier? Should we seek the most momentary happiness possible, or is a happy and fulfilled life one that consists of ups and downs over the course of it? These are just a few of the questions I get to ask Dr. Jonathan Haidt, author of “The Happiness Hypothesis” on this episode.

Many people confuse the state of happiness with a mood. The thought is that happiness is this momentary mood of joy that we feel, and often people spend all of their energy attempting to fill their lives with as much of that mood as possible, to attain the most happiness in their life possible. The truth, however, is more complex. As humans, we crave a storyline of attempting, failing, attempting again, and ultimately succeeding. That same storyline of ups and downs is what we crave out of a fulfilled life, and what will bring us the most happiness.

If you’re in search of the best, most fulfilled life possible, this episode is for you! Learn the surprising answer to whether plastic surgery can make you happier, if you should seek passionate love in marriage, why some traumatic experiences make you happier overall, whether your daily commute is making you less happy, and much more on this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

Key Takeaways:

  • The ancients had tons of advice on relationships and how to get along that is applicable to modern life
  • Many people confuse happiness with mood, or current feeling. But happiness in life consists of a story of ups and downs that leads to eventual happiness overall. A life that, at the end, you are proud to have lived
  • At the end of your day, write down three things that went well during the day. This simple exercise will increase your happiness overall
  • Traumatic experiences are essential to increasing our range of experiences, and thereby increasing our life happiness. Humans are just not their best when they haven’t had problems
  • Consider the level of stress that your commute is adding to your life daily, and whether it’s worth the home that you have decided to live in
  • If plastic surgery fixes something that was causing you shame, it increases your happiness levels
  • Relationships are far more important to happiness than any other aspect, including money and level of attractiveness
  • Passionate love tends to not last long. Passionate love evolved to get women pregnant, not to create long-lasting relationships
  • Companionate love is the kind that doesn’t wear off
  • Look for both passionate and companionate love in a marriage

"Most people think you need to lock yourself away for 6 months to write a book. But you can do it in a weekend!" - James Swanwick

(click to tweet)

Think you need to go away and lock yourself up in a cabin for 6 months to write your book? Think again. I just did it in a weekend, and on this episode I’m teaching you exactly how you can do the same.

Writing a book is, for most, a drawn out, labored process. But the truth is that it doesn’t have to be this way. You can get most of the grunt-work done in a very short amount of time, provided you take time to plan, and you get your hands dirty and just jump straight in!

Most people spend far too much time agonizing over the work, without really getting started! On this episode, I’ll teach you how to outline and plan your book, why this is such an important step, and tips to speed up the actual writing process. Learn how to get that masterpiece that’s inside of you out onto paper and in book format in just a weekend, on this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

Key Takeaways:

  • Most people think they need to lock themselves away for 6 months or something. But there’s a more efficient way to do it
  • These tips apply more to nonfiction than fiction
  • Brainstorm chapters and topics - maybe on a whiteboard - move them around, take some time with it. It took me a couple hours
  • Spend considerable time planning, so that your work is all or mostly all focused correctly, and you don’t have to rework things
  • Consider speaking your book out, and getting it professionally  transcribed
  • Get your book professionally edited using a freelance site like Upwork, etc
  • Last step: Polish it all up, work on a cover, etc. This step is not part of the weekend, because you want to take time to let ideas and decisions germinate
  • Topic brainstorming for your book: What are you an expert on?

  • The difference between juices and smoothies: Smoothies have fiber, juice does not. Juicing can allow our bodies to more easily absorb the nutrition of the fruit
  • The emphasis should be heavily on vegetable juice, not fruit
  • Get social support of you’re trying to lose weight
  • Eating poorly can negatively affect your sex drive
  • Carefully look at the labels on everything that you get
  • Reduce stress because it will make you eat more
  • Poor sleep will also make you eat more, and thereby gain weight

"In diet, you're either screwing up quality, quantity or timing. Find out which it is, and fix it." - Gunnar Peterson

(click to tweet)

Do you know what it takes to have the body of Hugh Jackman? What about Sly Stallone? Or Tom Brady? Maybe Bruce Willis? Gunnar Peterson is my guest on the James Swanwick Show today, and he’s bringing you the information you need to know to build a body like a celebrity or sports star.

Gunnar has a ton of value to bring on this show. We’re going over his top 10 tips to get an a-list celebrity body. Not only that, but we’re digging into the ways that you can make these kinds of workouts part of the rest of your life. Which means that you don’t need to spend hours and hours every day in the gym, or build your life around your nutrition plan. You can make it work with your schedule, regardless of how hectic and busy it is!

J-Lo called Gunnar the best trainer she ever had, and I think you’re going to see exactly why! So get excited and pumped to build the best body of your life! Learn how, on this episode of The James Swanwick Show!

10 Tips to Getting an A-List Hollywood Body

  1. Lift weights. Don’t just stick to cardio, even if you think you just want to drop some weight
  2. Do ab and core workout throughout the rest of the workout, don’t save it for the end
  3. Employ multi joint movements in your workout
  4. Mix up what you do first in the gym
  5. Mix up your workouts to keep your mind engaged throughout the workout
  6. Sequence movements from upper to lower, lower to upper, etc
  7. Look for what you’re the worst at in nutrition (quality, quantity, or timing), and focus on fixing that first
  8. Aim for appropriate meal sizes to your energy expenditure. Breakfast should be biggest, then lunch, and dinner should be the smallest. If you’re going to cheat, make it your post workout meal
  9. If you’re looking to lean-out for something specific, try to limit complex carbs (rize, breads, potatoes, pastas, wheat) for 3-7 days, after lunch. This will tighten up your body a lot
  10. Know how to eat defensively. Don’t get caught off guard traveling, at events with finger foods, etc. It’s hard to resist, especially if you’re feeling hungry. Eat defensively!

"There's power in doing... nothing." - James Swanwick

(click to tweet)

Key Takeaways:

  • Be purposeful about taking time to be alone, to refresh and recharge
  • It is possible to fit in the things that are a priority to you. This is so important that it should be a serious priority for anyone
  • Studies have shown that running can give you “break-throughs” in your life
  • Our lives are full of chaos, and sometimes we don’t even realize it, so we don’t realize how badly we need time to refresh
  • You don’t have to try to turn it into a vacation time, get out of your city or anything like that. Just find calm somehow in your own environment. Create it

“Society has told us being a predator is a bad thing. But a predator is noble, trustworthy, can be lethal, and is impossible to ignore.” - Bo Eason

(click to tweet)

Have you ever been to a stand-up comedy show? Watched one on TV? If you have, you’ll know that one of the trademarks of the genre is the performer sharing embarrassing real-life stories with the audience. It’s what makes us laugh! We might not all have the same embarrassing experience as the comedian, but everyone can relate to the feeling of being embarrassed. It’s universal.

Today on the James Swanwick Show I’m talking with Bo Eason, former NFL player and current performer, speaker, and storyteller. He’s sharing his experiences and expertise in telling his unique story to engage with an audience. As Bo knows, when you tell your story, the more personal and specific it becomes, the more universal its appeal. It seems counterintuitive, but the details of your story will remind the audience of their own life and then they’ll connect more with yours. So don’t be shy!

In performing and telling stories, it’s important to get your audience’s attention right away. You want them to be captivated from the first sentence on. Bo’s advice to draw them in immediately is to put the audience in the middle of the story. Let them know where your story is going, and they’ll be more interested in learning how you got there.

You might be thinking, I don’t know what my story is. Bo has tips for that too! Every story starts at the bottom of a mountain, with someone with a dream trying to achieve it. So think about what your mountain is, what moment or decision in your life has defined its course, and then listen to what Bo has to say about sculpting your story.

Bo’s got great advice for finding your story, connecting with your audience, and learning how to perform in a way that’s impossible to ignore! You won’t give the same speech after listening to this podcast.

Notes on the Show:

  • From the first sentence, put your audience in the middle of a story to draw them in from the beginning
  • The more personal your story is, the more universal it becomes. This is because when you tell your story and get personal, your audience thinks about their own life, and co-creates their own story with you
  • When you find yourself tuning out what people are saying, it’s usually because there’s no personal story being told in what is being said
  • There is NO separating personal from anything else. Telling stories need to be a part of every part of your life and your presentation if you want to connect with people
  • People, and especially men, tend to be very reluctant to share personal information. So when it is shared, it’s powerful. The very reluctance to open up and tell stories makes what you say incredibly attractive to the listener
  • Every great story starts at the bottom of a mountain, about someone with a dream, and the process of achieving that dream
  • Make an effort to express yourself physically. Too often, people are taught to bottle up that type of movement. Use it to express yourself!
  • When someone is at the top of their game, people can’t look away
  • Society has awarded the title “predator” to the worst of society. But that’s not what a predator is! A predator is noble, fierce, aggressive, and impossible to ignore
  • Embrace who you already are as a fierce predator, male or female, and channel that into the stories that you tell
  • When people can’t look away from you, only better things happen in your life and your potential to do incredible things with your life
  • When telling stories, look for your defining moment, and how it shapes who you are now, and consider circling your story around that moment
  • Embarrassing moments are one of the best ways to connect with your audience. Everyone has felt it, but not everyone wants to share it, so people connect strongly with you when you share embarrassing moments with them
  • Most importantly, be true to who you are in your stories!

"If what you want doesn't line up equal what you are willing to sacrifice to get it, you don't want it bad enough." - Tim Grover

(click to tweet)

Key Takeaways from the Book "Relentless" by Tim Grover:

  • Before you can have you want, you must become who you really are
  • Ask yourself, what you are willing to give up to get what you want?
  • Do the work everyday. Everyday, you have to do something you don't want to do
  • If you want success, you have to be comfortable being uncomfortable
  • If what you want doesn't equal what you are willing to sacrifice to get it, you don't want it badly enough
  • Being great isn't for everyone. It's ok if you're comfortable doing something else. Don't take this on if you aren't willing to put in the effort
  • Ask yourself: Where are you now? Where do you want to be? What are you willing to do to get there? Make a plan, and ACT ON IT!
  • Emotions make you weak, except for controlled anger, which can be powerful in the right hands
  • The greats never stop learning
  • People who do not pursue their own dreams probably will not support you in pursuing yours

“If we don’t challenge ourselves, in big form and consistently, then we get weaker and weaker until we're afraid to take on challenges.” - Mark Divine

(click to tweet)

Could YOU survive Navy Seal hell week? Steve Costello just did. Today, I’m speaking with Mark Divine, the founder of Sealfit Kokoro Camp, about what it takes to steel your mind for something incredibly challenging and difficult, and why you would even do something like that to yourself in the first place!

As Mark told me, “If we don’t challenge ourselves, in big form and consistently, then we get weaker and weaker until we afraid to take on challenges.” The fact of the matter is that most people, especially in modern western societies, do not subject themselves to incredibly stressful and difficult experiences regularly. Whereas these circumstances were a part of normal human life for much of history, they have largely gone away, and the result is that humans are not as well-connected with themselves and their resiliency as they could be. They simply do not know what they are capable of.

Mark Divine is working to help humans realize more fully their potential, the resiliency that they have within, and what they are capable of dealing with and accomplishing. While something like Sealfit Kokoro Camp is an incredibly difficult and trying thing to put yourself through, the rewards are stunning. Learn more about how you can live the most fulfilling life through trying times on this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

Notes on the Show:

  • Taking control of your own mind, realizing that your life and what you do is entirely up to you, and is the first step toward a more fulfilled life
  • Understand your principles and passions to find what you’re supposed to do in life
  • Understanding your guiding principles makes every other decision you need to make much easier
  • Try focusing on the negatives. Knowing what you do not want to do will lead you to what you should be doing
  • If we do not challenge ourselves, we get weaker and weaker
  • Deeply challenging processes help us live our lives better, and more the way we really wish we did
  • People can find that they are capable of much more than they think when they are put into really difficult situations
  • Seek out challenges for yourself, or else the challenges will come to you. You effectively “burn off karma.”
  • Use challenges to learn, grow, and help unlock your potential
  • Set conditions to win in your mind before you begin. Think through the entirety of the day, with each stage going as you would want it to
  • Say no. When you’re deeply aligned to your mission and your commitments, it becomes easier to say no

“Love the success while it’s happening, but don’t become too attached to it. Always be appreciative for it, and know that everything changes.” - Roz Savage

(click to tweet)

Roz Savage spent eleven years working in an office cubicle, thinking that success in her field of management consultancy would make her happy. It took all eleven years for her to realize she wasn’t happy, that she was just doing her job so that she could she make money to buy things she didn’t need.  She made a change.

Today, Roz is the only woman in the world to have traveled across three oceans—the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Indian—in a rowboat! Between 2005 and 2011, she spent 520 days at sea in her 23 foot rowboat. She rowed 5 million oar strokes and covered over 15,000 miles of ocean.

On this episode of the James Swanwick Show, I’m talking with Roz about how she went from her office job to spending months alone at sea. It was a huge transition, but one that she chose for herself.

In her own words, Roz tells me, “There’s a lot to be said for having enough naive optimism to get yourself into something, and then too much stubborn pride to get yourself out of it.” Roz says that the best way to mobilize yourself to take a big action is to commit to a vision. For her, the desire to find out who she really is can be a huge driver of this kind of action. And then, once you have your vision, she says, don’t think about how much you don’t know! Jump into action!  Start putting one foot in front of the other, and don’t look too far down the road, you’ll get lost.

In this episode, Roz talks more about her habits, the inspiration for her goals, and how she keeps herself motivated. You’ll be inspired by what she has to say about decision making and finding your own vision!

“Whatever it is that you want to do in the world, there’s vulnerability in putting yourself out there, and people are not always going to respect that.” - Roz Savage

(click to tweet)

Bullet Points:

  • Roz Savage is the only woman in the world to have ridden across three oceans in a row boat
  • She followed the crowd, thinking that success in the field of management consultancy would make her happy, but it didn’t
  • Remember that there are more important things in life than other people’s opinions
  • When you’re first starting out, you don’t know how much you don’t know. But come up with a plan that gives you just the slightest idea that you know what you’re doing, and begin putting one foot in front of the other
  • The motivation to find out who you really could be is a huge driver of action
  • Commit to a vision to really mobilize you and help you take massive action
  • Jump into action, but once you get going don’t look too far down the road. Take one stroke at a time. Just keep going
  • On the other hand, take time to zoom out from your problems, and see the progress that you’re still making in the big picture
  • In bad situations, know that everything changes. Eventually, the wind changes in your favor, and vice versa
  • Practice gratitude. Psychologists have shown that people who believe that they are lucky tend to attract better outcomes

Roz Savage’s Exercise For Finding Passion:

Imagine writing your own obituary or eulogy. Write two versions: The current one if you died today, and the one that you would want if you were really living your life the way you want to. Not about what you do, but about the kind of person you would be.

(click to tweet)

Everybody’s got stress in their life. Difficult work situations, finances, relationships, and constantly growing To Do Lists can all add up to a very stressed out and sleep-deprived you. This kind of stress is very bad for you and for your body.

Stress is a killer, but not all stress is bad. Working out puts physical stress on your muscles but, like many kinds of mental stress, it’s an acute stress that your body can recover from. And, although it’s not ideal for everyone, some people do their best work under pressure. What’s important is to manage and minimize the sources of unhealthy stress in your life.

Today on The James Swanwick Show, I’m talking about stress and healthy lifestyle choices with  Anthony DiClementi, the highly sought after fat loss expert. Anthony is most known for teaching people to use strategic cheating to accelerate fat loss: dieting while still being able to enjoy “cheat foods”, wine and cocktails.

Anthony knows that, just like everyone handles stress differently, our bodies also react to foods in different ways. For your diet to be successful and lasting, it needs to take into account the unique ways your body responds to and processes food. As Anthony says it, “In dieting, generic programs usually yield generic results. Know your own body!”

You won’t want to miss what else he has to say about eating healthy, managing stress, and building healthy habits in this episode!

“The right way to do something is a way that you can do every day. Create a plan that you know you can stick to.” - Anthony Diclementi

Notes on the Show:

  • It’s probably not possible or even healthy to completely get rid of stress. What you should try to do is manage stress
  • There are good kinds of stress, such as the stress that you put on your muscles when you work out to get into better shape
  • There is bad, chronic stress. This is the stress you experience when you hate your job, are unhappy, not sleeping enough, etc
  • Acute stress that doesn’t exceed our body's ability to recover from is good
  • The days of one diet fits all are gone. You need to get tested, or at least pay careful attention to the ways that you personally respond to food
  • Focus on deep breathing, using correct form
  • Pick routines and habits that you can do easily every day. Don’t bite off more than you can chew with new habits
  • Try to eat food in it’s whole form. When you can, it’s better to eat the actual food than a supplement based off of it

5 Ways to Handle Your Stress

  1. Diet. Make sure that you are eating food. Paleo is usually a good framework to help stress levels. But make sure that you customize your diet for your specific body. Stay away from problem foods. The ones that bring stress to you personally, and that you have taken note of
  2. Move your body, and sweat every day. Make it a part of your daily routine, and make sure it’s sustainable and fun
  3. Warm / Cold Showers
  4. Connect to the earth. Barefoot in the grass will give you a big boost
  5. Use the right supplements for you. Understand what will help you personally have more energy and less stress, and include those in your diet

The amount of social media in the world can be overwhelming, from a personal point of view and for businesses trying to use social media to promote their brand.

Most people start using social media for fun, posting their thoughts and activities live, to express themselves and connect with friends. But this use of social media can be stressful and ineffective when applied to marketing and a business strategy. It’s intimidating, and you can feel the need to be continually promoting yourself and your business on all platforms, all the time.

Laura Roeder, scalable social media expert and founder of the social media management platform Edgar, says there is another way.  In her words, “People get so caught up in following short term hacks that they forget the long term social media strategy.”

So what is a good long term social media strategy? Don’t post live and don’t be afraid to repeat content! This might seem counterintuitive, but only 5-10% of your audience are likely to see each individual post. It only makes sense that your posts should go out more than once. If you’re stuck creating each piece of content from scratch, your ROI will be much lower than it could be with recycled content.

A good rule of thumb is to have about three months of content in the backlog, so that you can repeat important content at least once a quarter. Edgar built onto this idea, by creating a library of your content to be recycled over time. This way, you can have continual content going out on platforms without needing to be constantly creating it. Edgar allows you to schedule posts in advance, and then save your live engagement for your audience. It’s a win-win!

So take a look at how effective your social media strategy is, and listen to this episode of James Swanwick Show for tips and ideas on how to get more traffic out of your posts.

“The idea that you have to create several new pieces of content every day for the rest of your life is what makes social media so overwhelming for entrepreneurs.” - Laura Roeder

Notes on the Show:

  • The amount of social media in the world, and the seeming requirement to be continually on all platforms promoting yourself and your business, can seem overwhelming
  • The archaic way of managing social media was to do everything live, posting at the moment you write something
  • There is a significant difference in using social media for yourself (personal) and for a business
  • Edgar built on the idea of creating a library of your content, that can be recycled over time, so that you have continual content going out on  platforms without needing to be constantly creating it
  • Most people start on social for fun. Coming from that angle, some people get nervous to move into business/marketing side of social media
  • Understand how your brand comes across, how you want it to come across, and make sure that everything you post lines up with that
  • Don’t be afraid to repeat content! In the context of marketing, you usually will not get a good ROI if you’re creating each new piece of content from scratch
  • 5-10% of your audience will see one single thing that you post, so it only makes sense that it should go out more than once to up that percentage
  • A good rule of thumb is to have about 3 months of content in the backlog, so you’re repeating things once a quarter. Some people succeed with much more frequenting repetition
  • Don’t be posting live. Save that for your engagement with your audience. Schedule posts in advance, and then engage live

Most Americans don’t even consider the idea that taking extended periods of time off of work is an option. It’s almost like it would be looked down upon by others. As if you’re not doing your civic duty by living such a luxurious life of pleasure. Where is your work ethic? How can you reasonably expect to get anything done?

Karan Rajaj is here to tell you why the idea of taking 1 out of every 3 years off makes so much sense, gives you time to recoup and reenergize, and actually makes you more productive! Having the constant knowledge in the back of your mind that your break is coming, that your time for recuperation is right around the corner, actually gives you more energy and focus to do the work you need to do!

So the concept is that in every 4 years, you should spend 3 years working, and 1 year traveling the world, specifically not working on your regular job, but putting time and effort into things that are not for the express purpose of making you money. They year off, this time of creativity and putting time and effort into your passions, also often brings the biggest breakthroughs in your life that will end up making you money.

So open up your mind to a schedule that you might not have thought possible! What if this schedule allows you to get more done than you ever could before? What if you creativity, and your career, would soar through this pacing? Learn more about what this concept is all about and how it could help you accomplish your goals in life on this episode of the James Swanwick Show.

“When you tie your life to one dimension which you’re working and making money in, you’re not fully understanding who you are and what you’re capable of.” - Karan Bajaj

Notes on the Show:

  • Taking time off is something that most americans don’t even consider. People think it could be looked down upon
  • Often, when you take an extended period away, you find yourself far more effective and efficient when you come back to your work
  • 3-1-3 model: 3: Working very hard, accumulating wealth very purposeful during that time. 1: year off, spending money. 3: Back to work
  • You will often see a correlation between time off, a sabbatical, and momentous change happening in your life. You just will not know what the change is
  • Often times, your best creativity will come when you are not doing something to make money, but simply doing it because you love it. The need to make money with your work can stifle the creativity of it
  • There are almost unlimited ways that you can choose to live your life. The question is: What will make you personally most happy?
  • There is a societal pressure of social norms that discourages taking large amounts of time off, regardless of how healthy and even productive it is
  • Start building the muscle of taking larger breaks (10 days), really taking full breaks from your work, where you’re so absorbed in what you’re doing (meditation, climbing mountains), that you start to forget the rest of your life
  • The act of creation is powerful for opening up new things in your life and your personality
  • Defining the period of time when you will be completely invested in your work helps you focus and actually get much  more done during that time

We’ve been made to believe, through clever marketing and brand positioning, that certain brands and juices are good for us. Brands like Naked and Odwalla have done everything in their power to make us believe that they are healthy options, but are we being lead astray? Are the very foods that we’ve been told are healthy, actually keeping us fat, lazy, and unproductive?

Ian Ryan, host of the Fearless and Healthy podcast, is here to talk about the sneaky ways sugar can sneak into a diet and ruin all attempts at weight loss, or just healthy living and eating in general! Some of the worst culprits are the two above mentioned brands, Naked and Odwalla, and the incredible amount of sugar that ends up in a single bottle of their “all-natural” juice does far more harm than good!

The real problem lies in the proportions. Fruits like apples and others can be beneficial in small portions, but often pre-packaged juices contain unreasonable amounts, and the sugar content gets far too high for healthy eating.

On this episode of The James Swanwick Show, Ian Ryan talks about some of the simple ways that we can know that we’re safe and healthy in what we are choosing to eat. Look for items with a very small ingredient list. Shop around the perimeter of the grocery store. Always check the serving size before the nutrition facts. Plus, tons more to help you live the healthiest lifestyle possible, on this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

“It doesn’t matter how healthy something is, too much of it is a bad thing.” - Ian Ryan

Notes on the Show:

  • We make certain assumptions based on the brand or the store that what they sell will be healthy, when that’s often not the case
  • Be aware of the number of servings on the container. A bottle of “healthy” juice could have 25 grams of sugar, but there’s 2.5 servings in the bottle, so a lot of people end up drinking between 50-100 grams of sugar
  • One of the only healthy ways to go is to make your own juice, and understand that you can’t pack it with fruit. More veggies than fruit. Fruit should only be added as a touch of flavor
  • Even sugars from fruit, which most people consider to be healthy, are still going to raise your blood sugar, and if you’re trying to go on a cleanse or lose weight, you need to be very conscious of the sugar levels
  • To be safe, stay away from anything that is bottled
  • Shop the perimeter of the grocery store, not the center aisles
  • Berries are often the healthiest type of fruit
  • Bananas are one of the least healthy type of fruit
  • Always pay attention to serving sizes. Even if something is healthy, too much is still a bad thing
  • Learn how to read labels and understand nutrition and portions
  • Don’t eat things with tons of ingredients
  • Avoid lean fats and fat-free foods
  • Nuts are healthy, but extremely dense in calories, so be careful of servings sizes. Eat them slowly so that they will fill you up
  • Your body is very dehydrated in the morning, so make sure you have water before anything else
  • Try a homemade healthy green smoothie in the morning

“Don’t use a lack of grass-fed meats, the ideal option, etc, to deter your diet. Following a diet is all about making do with what you’ve got.” - Robb Wolf

(click to tweet)

Debates about which diets are the best can be some of the most polarizing, intense conversations you’ll have. It seems everyone has their own opinions about what is healthiest and best, with their own well-thought-out arguments to support their stance, and yet their opinions contradict each other. How are you supposed to know what to eat?!

Today’s guest is Robb Wolf, and while this episode is all about a paleo approaching to eating, Robb Wolf will be the first to recommend that you experiment constantly, to find out what works best for you. Everybody is different and will respond to diets differently, so the most important thing is that you not get religious about the diet you choose, but that you remain open-minded about ways that you could improve what you’re eating to get better health and energy results.

With that in mind, the body of work is immense on reasons why the paleo diet both makes the most sense and is the most healthy diet that we know. If you’re looking for the best way to maximize health and energy in the foods you eat, then the paleo diet is probably what you’re looking for. So get ready to learn about it from one of the top experts, on this episode of the James Swanwick Show.

“Don’t believe what I say. Test every diet on your own body, see how you respond, and then go with that.” - Robb Wolf

(click to tweet)

Notes on the Show:

  • Paleo is not about trying to go back to the dark ages, but rather looking at the ways our bodies evolved, and how that affects the food that will give us the most energy and vibrancy in our lives
  • Our ancestors ate very protein and fat-heavy diets, with carbs playing a role occasionally, but not on a regular basis. So that is the diet that works best for our bodies
  • The immediate benefits of switching to a paleo diet is that inflammation will go down in our bodies
  • Paleo diets help increase testosterone in men, which is essential to a man’s health
  • If you’re going to drink alcohol, switch from beer to tequila or bourbon
  • Get rid of pasta and rice because of the gluten in them. Almost everyone feels better when they remove gluten from their diet
  • While grass-fed meats are ideal, don’t get stuck on the idea that they must be grassfed to make it healthy
  • Grass-fed ground beef has become very easy to find in places like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods
  • For fruits and vegetables, make sure that you are eating a wide variety of colors
  • Varying spices is a great way to mix up the taste of the food you eat, while keeping the actual content similar and healthy
  • Good fats actually help you lose fat when you eat them
  • Avoid using herb mixes, as they tend to have large amounts of sodium. Try to use the individual spice, whole if you can
  • Be very careful of fruit juices, even if they are fresh squeezed. It usually just ends up being far too much fruit in one cup
  • Be careful not to go too low on carbs if you do a lot of heavy training
  • Be experimental in your diets. Don’t be religious about anything, but trying it all out, and see what works best for your body makeup
  • Be creative about finding the healthy options at the places you and your friends like the eat

What happens when one of the world’s most infamous playboys, known everywhere for his rambunctious lifestyle and lack of boundaries, decides it’s time to settle down? When he starts to take a deeper look at his life, and some of the possible reasons behind his wild behavior, and if there might be more to life than sleeping around and getting hammered every night?

Tucker Max is a bestselling author and self-proclaimed “raging dick-head.” He’s become famous for his reckless and crazy lifestyle. This episode is a throwback to an interview I did with Tucker two years ago, when he was just starting to settle down, and to move into a calmer time of his life.

We talk about a lot of the reasons behind Tucker’s own time of reckless living, and some of the ways in which it can be ok, and some of the reasons it can be very harmful and destructive. In addition, there are a lot of really specific tidbits for people who want to meet more women, or people in general, to find better relationships. For example, if you want to meet more women, simply list out the things you’re interested in. Of those, throw out any that women in general are not interested in, and then find ways to connect and get involved with groups centering around those remaining things. You will not be able to help but meet women.

This one is a riot, but also full of useful information at the same time. Tucker has been through a lot, and developed valuable insight into the psychology of party culture, where it’s right and wrong, and how to understand how it should fit into your own life specifically. Enjoy!

“When you decide to take full responsibility for everything in your life, you’ve made the leap from child to adult.” - Tucker Max

(click to tweet)

Notes on the Show:

  • When you have everything you want externally, and you’re still not happy, you need to start asking questions about what’s going on internally
  • When you decide to take full responsibility for everything in your life, you’ve made the leap from child to adult
  • When something is wrong with someone’s life, most people look externally for a reason, but it’s often either internal, or sometimes a combination of both. But, regardless of any external or internal problems, you are responsible for your own life
  • Often (not always), when a guy is hooking up with a ton of women, he has unresolved issues in his life, and unresolved feelings toward important women in his life
  • Other times, it’s an attachment issue
  • Unconscious psychological defenses are often too strong for someone to be able to tell you what is wrong, and for you to be able to accept it
  • If you want to meet a specific kind of woman, or person in general, you need to think carefully about where they are and what they do, what you like of those things, and then go to groups centered around those things
  • The internet is full of productivity blogs, etc, but a lot of people who spend a lot of time reading those are using them as guilt reduction for not actually getting things done
  • If you’re a man, you’re already a real man! There aren’t any specific things you need to do or not do to be a “real man,” because there are counterexamples for all of them
  • Instead of "What is a real man?" the better question is “what kind of man do you want to be?”

“Most people who want change, want painless change. But it just doesn’t work like that.” - Tucker Max

Are you interested in learning about one of the most powerful tools, that the greatest minds throughout history have used? One of the best ways to ensure that you’re getting where you want to be going, that you’re taking progressive steps to accomplish your goals, and that your focus is in the right place? I’m not talking about some new technological breakthrough or expensive service, this episode is all about journaling.

People tend to find new, different things exciting. Humans get a dopamine rush when they learn about something new and different, and are able to picture the ways in which this new thing could help them in the future. And yet something as simple and old-fashioned as journaling is routinely overlooked and ignored. It may not be flashy, but it gets results.

Simply the act of writing something down is not only going to give you a much more full understanding of the subject you are writing about, it will also make you far more likely to actually implement it. There is something incredible about the act of writing, especially goals, and it causes humans to operate in ways that facilitates the accomplishment of those goals.

This episode is all about journaling, the oldest and one of the most powerful tools of self development available. Learn how journaling can help you, best practices to help you get the most out of it, where you can fit it into your daily life, as well as much more, on this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

"Saying that you don’t have the time to journal is like being on a road-trip and saying you don’t have time to get gas." - Clark Danger

Notes on the Show:

  • Journalling is a tool that the greatest minds of history have used
  • Men can be resistant to the idea of journaling, because it is considered passive. But journaling is in fact active, not passive
  • Over time, a journal becomes a “success log” that you can go back to and review
  • Your own notes, whether about books or “ah ha” moments, will resonate much deeper with you than something somebody else wrote
  • One of the best ways to learn something in a way that will really stick is to talk about it, and teach it if you have the opportunity
  • Try to keep in mind the amount of time you have left, so that you don’t waste it
  • Saying that you don’t have the time to do things like journaling is like being on a road-trip and saying you don’t have time to get gas
  • Save yourself first. Prioritize your health and wellbeing, so that you can take care of others

“Monitoring how you spend your time is one of the most important decisions you make.” - Daniel Francis

(click to tweet)

Are you an effective human being? Do you get stuff done, or do you procrastinate? Do you focus on what you need to do to achieve your goals, or are you stopped in your tracks by every distraction, every phone notification and email? Do you live your life in a way that will cause your look back on your life, from your deathbed, and be proud of what you accomplished? Are you an elite person?

Regardless of where you stand on the road to becoming an elite human being, Daniel Francis is here to help you learn how to achieve the next level. This interview is packed with practical, step-by-step methods to get more out of your time on earth. Daniel is a master at clarifying the steps and the processes that need to be put in place for you to be truly satisfied with your output, not wasting time on frivolous and less worthwhile activities, and instead being ruthlessly dedicated to those things that will bring you true, lasting and fulfilling happiness.

Throughout, Daniel has a really visceral take on achieving lasting happiness in a life, from his detailed attention to his physical senses, to taking “cave time” for big decisions, to mastering his mornings and nurturing his evenings. His habit of turning his phone completely off, not just silencing it, shows his dedication to being truly present, and to ruthlessly accomplishing his goals.

Wherever you stand on the spectrum of a life truly optimized for happiness, fulfillment and achievement, you’ll get a lot out of this episode. If you’re looking for practical steps to build a better life on several different levels, you’ve come to the right place. So please join me on this journey of exploring the processes we can put in place to take our lives from average to awesome, with Daniel Francis, on this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

Notes on the Show:

  • When you get your communication with yourself sorted out, you start to communicate more effectively with the world around you as well

  • You can’t wait for things to happen to you. You must go out and make them happen

  • You have to be connected with your emotions to know what your calling and passion is. You have to connect with your senses and emotions

  • Use your senses more regularly. Focus on them

  • Take time to appreciate and be thankful for the world around you

  • Find people who are doing something similar to what you want to be doing, and then model them, and their behaviors

  • Look at the things that you feel obligated by, and ask yourself if it is all really necessary. Unnecessary obligations will trap you and keep you from going out and doing what you really want to do

  • Take “Cave Time,” where you go into isolation and ask yourself simple questions to help you gain clarity on life direction and decisions

  • Look for experiences that will bring you longer-term joy and increased happiness, rather than short spikes of pleasure

  • Be the master of your mornings. Consider not turning your phone on until later in the day

  • Use the nighttime, while you are sleeping, to program your subconscious. You can do this by focusing on important things right before going to sleep

  • Notifications, unanswered messages, etc, on your phone put a tremendous pull on your mind. If you can turn the phone all the way off at times, so that you’re not even getting those notifications, it will free your mind up

Daniel Francis’ Death-Bed Clarification Exercise:

Imagine yourself on your deathbed, and ask yourself two questions:

  1. What would I be pissed at myself for not doing in my lifetime?

  2. What would need to happen for me to get to this point, on my deathbed, and be ecstatic, fulfilled with peace, and ready to pass on

“Look at how your identity, who you’ve convinced yourself that you are, may have trapped you, and where you should step away from it.” - Daniel Francis

Do you have a method in place to make sure that you accomplish everything that you want to get done? Is there a reliable system to guarantee that you are accomplishing what you set out to, thereby making progress on the big goals in your life? Or do you find that you get stuck on meaningless activities, on a human hamster-wheel, constantly working but rarely making progress?

Michael Sandler knows a thing or two about getting things done. He’s the host of one of the top ranked self-help podcasts in iTunes, Inspire Nation, has completed a 5,000 mile, 40 day, solo, unsupported bike ride across the country, was a successful businessman, became a leading barefoot running coach, and so much more. He’s mastered the ability to see a goal through to fulfillment, and he’s paid careful attention along the way to the things that have allowed him to see such success.

This episode of The James Swanwick Show is all about how to put processes into place that, over time, allow you to accomplish incredible things. Michael talks about techniques to skip intermediate steps on the way to success, essentially jumping to the top rung of the ladder. We get into Michael’s 5-step method to accelerate success, how to build tasks into a brainless system that help get them done without you even thinking about it, and how looking at time as blocks and putting the most important thing you have to do into the very next available block can help you be productive even through an unpredictable schedule.

But one of the most poignant moments of the show comes when Michael makes the statement that “fear has never killed anyone. What kills you is knowing that you didn’t go for it.” And you can see that Michael truly lives his life this way. Being afraid is not a problem. The problem is in allowing fear to hold you back from really going for what you want to accomplish in this life. Don’t be someone who looks back on their life with regret about the things that they didn’t even attempt to accomplish. Give it a shot! Take the initial first steps, and use Michael’s 5-step method to make progress on your dreams.

So listen up and pay attention to this episode, in order to learn how to accomplish more faster, to not get burnt out, to work harder and smarter than everyone, and to ultimately accomplish your goals and live the life that you want on this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

“Don’t climb the ladder, jump to the top rung.” - Michael Sandler

(click to tweet)

Notes on the Show:

  • You don’t always have to start from the bottom of something. Look at what the people at the top are doing, and emulate them to skip intermediate steps

  • When we truly believe that we can be the best, we will not only practice, but we will visualize. This process of believing and visualize is extremely powerful in accomplishing goals

  • Be fearless in taking steps toward your goal. They don’t have to be big steps, but they need to be headed the right direction

  • Take a small step toward what you have to do (something like putting it in your calendar) to make sure that it actually happens

  • Taking action will often help you to adjust your vision for where you want to go and how you want to get there

  • When there is an obstacle in front of you, before you try to overcome it, take a second and try to understand why it’s there and if it means you should course-correct

  • You must be aligned personally with the work you are doing. Otherwise, you will get burned out on it

  • Build the things that you must get done into a brainless system

  • Look at your time as blocks of time. Then make a commitment to grab the first block that becomes available to get the stuff that you have to do done

5 Ways to Accelerate Your Success

  1. Write it down. Don’t underestimate the power of journaling as if it has already happened. Burn this visualization into your brain, including all the details, with a lot of emotion

  2. Initiate. Get started!

  3. Take small baby steps at the beginning, which eventually start to turn into larger steps

  4. Have a plan. Know where you want to go. Have a goal in mind, and adjust your sails as you go

  5. Work harder and smarter than anyone else. Put in the time and effort.

“If you’re doing the things you want to do, people will hone in on that energy, and you’ll attract the right relationships into your life.” - Dr. Michael Friedman

(click to tweet)

Are you the sort of person who is constantly looking to better yourself? The kind of person with boundless energy for improvement, who wants and plans to do really big things in the world? Will you stop at nothing to accomplish your goals? And one last question: Do you really think that spending the weekend hungover is helping you get there?

Today’s guest on the James Swanwick show is Dr. Michael Friedman. Dr. Friedman is a clinical psychologist, and today’s show is all about how that drinking habit of yours, which may be no major problem, might not be helping you in any way, and may in fact be hampering your success in more significant ways than you realize.

One of the most powerful tools that Dr. Friedman recommends is what he calls “motivational interviewing.” This process consists of laying out, in a very honest fashion, the pros and cons of drinking. And, as Dr. Friedman points out, it is essential that the pros be adequately represented - as there are in fact pros to drinking! Things like being less inhibited, feeling more accepted by groups, and other aspects, should be considered real and significant pros! But then reposition and look with equal honest at the cons, because when the cons of drinking are approaching with this level of honesty, most will find that alcohol is indeed a net loss for them in their life.

This episode is all about the importance of taking a careful inventory of yourself and your relationship with alcohol. Ask yourself why you’re drinking, and choosing to get drunk. For most people, the answer is that they want to be more sociable, and maybe even find a mate. But consider the absurdness of this plan! To think that you will be able to attract and cultivate better relationships, whether romantic or platonic, in a state of drunken stupor is ludicrous!

So prepare to be enlightened about alcohol in society! Dr. Michael Friedman will help you understand when it does and does not make sense for you specifically, and how you can really start to take control of this area of your life. All of this, of course, leading you to a better, healthier and happier life, on this episode of the James Swanwick Show!

“One of the dangerous things about moderate drinking is that you can end up being dependent on it in a very subtle way.” Dr. Michael Friedman

(click to tweet)

Notes on the Show

  • Alcohol might not be a major evil force in your life. But is it helping you in any way?
  • Motivational interviewing is the process of asking yourself honestly: What are the pros and cons of drinking?
  • When doing the motivational interview, don’t hold back about the pros - because there are pros!
  • But also be honest about the cons
  • Ask yourself: How much drinking should you do to get all the pros, while limiting the cons?
  • That number (number of drinks), which may be zero, is what you should shoot for
  • Calculate the cost of drinking, including more than alcohol, such as taxi’s, binge eating, etc…
  • Experiment on yourself, and document the results, to really understand what is working
  • Ask yourself: What is your purpose in going out? Then ask yourself if alcohol is truly helping you accomplish that purpose
  • If you’re spending time around people who are not supportive of you trying to be your best self and continually improve, maybe it’s time to get around other people
  • Moderate drinking can be harmful in a sneaky way: When you use alcohol as a crutch to help you relax or be social, over time you can’t accomplish it without alcohol, and then you’re dependent
  • Choose to spend your time with people who are like what you want to become

Jame’s Method to Get Unstuck: Ask Yourself...

“If you’re doing the things you want to do, people will hone in on that energy, and you’ll attract the right relationships into your life.” - Dr. Michael Friedman
